St. Louis Council History

The Beginning

The Girls on the Run Council in St. Louis was born in 2002 after Jill Indovino read an article about the program in Runner’s World magazine and wanted to bring it to St. Louis.

What started out as a “hobby” run out of Jill’s home with 20 girls participating the first year has now grown to a 501(c)(3) that serves nearly 5,000 girls with hundreds of volunteer coaches helping along the way.

Awards and Recognition

In 2009, Girls on the Run received an Active Living Award from Trailnet and the Galvanizing and Connecting Grassroots Organizations Award from Jinna Development Corporation (JCORP) for creating an environment for model community life.  Also, GOTR was a finalist for the Ladue News Charity Awards for helping tomorrow’s women develop self-esteem and a healthy body image.  We have been recognized for enriching our community this past year and are thankful for those who have nominated our organization.
